Travel tips

Good to know before you go ♡

Best time to visit

  • Spring (March–April): tulips, blossom, cool days.
  • Summer (May–August): peak domestic season; the Amarnath Yatra (July–August) brings crowds and extra security.
  • Autumn (September–November): clear skies, chinars, saffron.
  • Winter (December–February): snow, skiing in Gulmarg, very cold nights.

Getting around

  • Hire a Srinagar taxi for day trips and agree the route and waiting time in advance.
  • Inside Pahalgam (Aru, Betaab) and Sonamarg, switch to local registered taxis.
  • Self-drive needs a valid driving licence; helmets are mandatory on two-wheelers.

Accommodation

  • Srinagar: registered houseboats on Dal and Nigeen, or hotels on Boulevard Road and in Rajbagh.
  • Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam suit one or two nights.
  • Book ahead in peak season; prices change by season.

Permits and restricted areas

  • Foreign nationals need a permit from the Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, for Gurez.
  • Amarnath Yatra pilgrims must register in advance each year with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.
  • Some areas remain closed: see Travel Safety & Essentials below.

What to pack

  • Summer: layers and sun protection.

Travel Safety & Essentials

Free, and worth reading first ♡

Current advisories

  • Check official government and local-authority advisories before you leave, and confirm that your destinations, routes and activities are open.
  • Some places reopened in February 2026; around 30 others, including Baisaran and Chandanwari, were listed as closed until 31 December 2026, and trekking routes were closed until further orders.
  • The UK government advises against all travel to Jammu & Kashmir except Jammu city. Check your own government’s advice and your insurance.
  • Follow local instructions during any security incident, restriction or closure. Conditions can change after this page was checked.

Weather and roads

  • Mountain weather changes quickly. Check forecasts and J&K Traffic Police road updates before setting out.
  • Snow, heavy rain and landslides can close roads, including NH44 near Ramban and Banihal, and lengthen travel times.
  • Never drive closed or flooded roads; keep a buffer day.

Trekking and adventure

  • Use registered operators and experienced local guides.
  • Check route status, weather, equipment and permissions; trekking routes were closed in July 2026.
  • Carry good footwear, layers, water, basic first aid and a charged phone, and share your route with someone you trust.
  • Never enter restricted areas or carry on in unsafe conditions.

Health and altitude

  • Gulmarg and Sonamarg sit high in the mountains: rest on arrival and avoid overexertion.
  • Seek medical help for severe headache, breathlessness or confusion.
  • Carry your prescription medicines.

Transport, stays and family

  • Agree taxi fares and waiting time in advance; follow posted union rates.
  • Check that a houseboat or hotel is registered, and plan stays and transport ahead.
  • Keep ID documents and booking details secure, with copies offline.
  • Take care near lakes, rivers, roads, steep slopes and remote areas, especially with children.

Customs and responsible tourism

  • Remove shoes at mosques and shrines, and respect prayer times and private property.
  • Don’t photograph security installations; ask before photographing people.
  • Don’t litter or disturb wildlife, and follow local rules on camping, fires and protected areas.

Emergency numbers

  • 112: national emergency number (police, fire, medical); ERSS-112 operates across Jammu & Kashmir.
  • 1363: tourist helpline · 100 police · 101 fire.
  • 108: emergency ambulance · 102: ambulance for pregnant women and infants.
  • Network coverage is patchy outside towns, so a call may not connect everywhere.

Emergency numbers last checked 23 October 2026: Incredible India, Srinagar district administration, News On AIR (ERSS-112 in J&K, April 2026), Kashmir Life (108 and 102 ambulances). Closures and advisories last checked 21 October 2026. Conditions change: always confirm with official sources before you travel.
