Assam follows the Brahmaputra through a wide, green valley, and for most travellers it is the front door to the Northeast: Guwahati is the region’s main air and rail hub. Beyond the city are grasslands with one-horned rhinos, river islands with Vaishnavite monasteries, and the estates that give Assam tea its name.
Kaziranga and Manas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Moidams of Charaideo, the burial mounds of the Ahom kings, were added to the list in 2024. Plan around the national park season: the core zones of Kaziranga close during the monsoon.
