This Union Territory was formed in 2020 by merging Dadra and Nagar Haveli with Daman and Diu. Its three parts are separate: Daman on the Gujarat coast near Vapi, Diu as an island off Saurashtra, and Silvassa inland among forests.
Daman and Diu were Portuguese territories until 1961, and their forts and churches still show it. Silvassa is a green base for the hills and rivers of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
