North India · The planned city
Chandigarh
Le Corbusier’s modernist capital, a sculpture garden of broken things, and a lake at the foot of the hills.
Capitol Complex, Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, the sectors and day trips.
Chandigarh is India’s best-known planned city, designed in the 1950s by Le Corbusier with Pierre Jeanneret, Jane Drew, Maxwell Fry and Indian architects. Laid out in numbered sectors with green belts, it is the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana and a gateway to the Himachal hills.
The Capitol Complex is part of the UNESCO-listed architectural work of Le Corbusier. Add Nek Chand’s Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake and you have one of the most rewarding short city breaks in the north.
