Tamil Nadu has one of the world’s great living temple traditions. Its towns grew around vast temple complexes that are still in daily use, from the Pallava shore temples near Chennai to the Chola temples of the Kaveri delta and the gopurams of Madurai.
Beyond the temples are the mansions and kitchens of Chettinad, the pilgrim island of Rameswaram, the southern tip of India at Kanyakumari, and the Nilgiri and Palani hills. The Union Territory of Puducherry sits on the coast within Tamil Nadu but is a separate territory with its own guide.

Temple towns
Tamil Nadu’s great temples are working places of worship, not monuments. Visit early in the morning or in the evening, when rituals take place and the stone is cool underfoot. The gopurams, or gateway towers, are often the most visible part, but the inner halls and corridors hold the finest carving.
A good route runs south from Chennai: the Pallava monuments at Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram, the Chola temples at Thanjavur, Darasuram and Gangaikondacholapuram, and the Nayak-period temple city of Madurai.
- Dress: cover shoulders and knees; remove shoes at the entrance.
- Phones and cameras: many temples restrict or ban mobile phones inside; lockers are usually available at the gate.
- Inner sanctums: some are open only to Hindus. Follow the signs and staff instructions.
The hills
The Nilgiris in the west and the Palani hills further south offer cool air and tea estates. Ooty is busy in summer and on holidays; Coonoor and Kotagiri are quieter. Kodaikanal, in the Palanis, is built around a lake and forest walks.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty on a narrow-gauge line. Book ahead in peak season.
