The Himalaya Walks the Runway

Ladakh’s craft is coming to Lakmé Fashion Week in Delhi. A preview of “The Fifth Season” — and why mountain style deserves more attention.

Ladakh’s craft is coming to a Delhi runway. A preview — from a magazine whose cover was shot at Key Monastery in Spiti.

When people talk about Indian fashion, the mountains rarely come up. That may be about to change, at least for a week. Lakmé Fashion Week, held in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India, returns to New Delhi from 13 to 18 October — and among its showcases is “The Fifth Season”, described by organisers as a fashion story from Ladakh, presented by the Department of Industries & Commerce of the Union Territory of Ladakh, spotlighting regional craftsmanship, indigenous traditions and the creative heritage of the Himalayan region (ANI).

The same week also includes FDCI x Pearl Academy “First Cut”, a showcase for emerging designers (Guardian Chronicle).

Why mountain style matters

Our read

In the high Himalaya, clothes have never been decoration first. They are warmth, protection and identity, made by hand for a place where the weather decides almost everything. That is exactly the kind of craft the rest of the fashion world spent September rediscovering — in London’s handmade detail and Milan’s return to heritage.

What we want to see: how a regional craft story holds up on a city runway, whether the pieces feel wearable away from the mountains, and who the makers are behind them.

Coming next

Once the showcase has taken place, we’ll update this story with what was actually shown. In the meantime, our Spiti series — from the roads to what to actually wear up there — is on its way in Travel.
