Puducherry on foot: White Town, the Tamil Quarter and a day in Auroville

A walking route through Puducherry’s French and Tamil quarters, the seafront Promenade and the Ashram, with a day trip to Auroville and notes on booking the Matrimandir.

2 minutes

Puducherry was the capital of French India until 1954, and it is now the main town of a union territory of four separate districts. Its old town is small, flat and shaded, perfect for a slow walk or a bicycle. A canal divides it in two: the French-planned White Town towards the sea, and the Tamil Quarter inland.

White Town and the Promenade

Start early on the seafront Promenade, Goubert Avenue, when locals walk and exercise; the road is closed to traffic at set times in the evenings and early mornings. Along it are a statue of Gandhi, the French War Memorial and the old lighthouse. Behind the seafront, streets of yellow and white villas with bougainvillea lead to the Notre-Dame des Anges church, the Puducherry Museum and Bharathi Park, with its white Aayi Mandapam monument.

The Ashram

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926, occupies several buildings in White Town. Visitors may enter the courtyard where the samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lies under a frangipani tree; silence and modest dress are expected.

The Tamil Quarter

Cross the canal and the architecture changes: Tamil houses with deep verandas called thinnai, carved wooden doors and inner courtyards. The Manakula Vinayagar Temple, dedicated to Ganesha, is the best-known shrine, and the Grand Bazaar sells fruit, flowers and fish. Further west, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has striking stained glass.

A day in Auroville

Auroville, about 10 kilometres north, is an experimental international township founded in 1968, spread across land in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Start at the Visitors Centre, which explains the project, then walk to the viewing point for the golden Matrimandir. Entry to the Matrimandir’s inner chamber is for concentration rather than sightseeing and must be booked in advance through Auroville’s official booking service. Cafés, bakeries and craft workshops make good stops.

Planning

  • Getting there: about three to four hours by road from Chennai, along the East Coast Road via Mahabalipuram.
  • Getting around: walk or cycle in the old town; hire a scooter or auto for Auroville.
  • When to go: November to March. October to December brings the north-east monsoon.
  • Sea safety: swimming off the Promenade is unsafe; head to designated beaches north of town.
