Jharkhand’s waterfalls and the Netarhat plateau

A guide to Jharkhand’s plateau country: the waterfalls around Ranchi, the Patratu valley, the hill station of Netarhat and the forests of Betla, with seasons and safety advice.

2 minutes

Jharkhand sits on the Chota Nagpur plateau, a landscape of sal forest, red earth and rivers that tumble off the plateau’s edge. Few travellers make it here, which is part of the appeal. A short trip from Ranchi can take in waterfalls, a winding valley road and a quiet hill station.

The waterfalls around Ranchi

Several waterfalls lie within a couple of hours of Ranchi. The best known is Hundru, where the Subarnarekha river drops about 98 metres. Others are close by. They are fullest in September and October, just after the monsoon, and much reduced by late spring.

  • Do not swim near the falls; rocks are slippery and currents can be strong.
  • Steps down to viewpoints can be steep: wear good shoes.
  • Go on weekdays if you can; weekends are busy with local visitors.

The Patratu valley

Close to Ranchi, the road through the Patratu valley loops down through forested hills to a reservoir. It is popular for the drive itself and the views.

Netarhat

Netarhat, in Latehar district, is a hill station at about 1,128 metres, often called the ‘Queen of Chotanagpur’. It is known for its sunrise and sunset viewpoints, including Magnolia Point, and for the Upper and Lower Ghaghri falls nearby. It is about 156 km from Ranchi.

Betla

West of Netarhat, Betla National Park forms part of the Palamau Tiger Reserve, with sal and bamboo forest, elephants and deer, and the ruins of the old Palamau forts. The park closes to tourists from 1 July to 30 September each year; it reopened on 1 October 2026.

Practicalities

  • Hire a car with a driver from Ranchi; public transport is limited.
  • October to March is the best season.
  • Avoid driving at night on forest roads, and check current local advice for remote areas.
  • See our Jharkhand guide for more places, including Deoghar.
