Slow weekends in the Himalayan foothills

Quiet hill towns, village walks and valley views in Himachal Pradesh, planned for a slow two- or three-day break.

2 minutes

A weekend in the Himalayan foothills does not need a packed schedule. Two or three days is enough to settle into a village, walk a few trails and watch the light change on the valley. Himachal Pradesh has many places for this kind of slow trip, and the ones below are a good starting point.

Jibhi, in the Tirthan Valley

Jibhi is a small village with wooden houses on forested slopes. It sits in the Tirthan Valley, close to the Great Himalayan National Park. Spend a morning on the village lanes, then sit with a coffee and look across the hills. Walks from the village are short and suit a relaxed pace.

Bir and the Kangra valley

Bir, in the Kangra district, is known for its meadows, its Tibetan monasteries and paragliding from the hills above. Go in the morning, when the air is still, and plan an afternoon without a fixed itinerary. The valley is wide, so distances look shorter than they are on the road.

Dharamshala and the Dhauladhar

From Dharamshala, the snow-capped Dhauladhar range rises above green slopes. Go for the views at dawn or dusk, when the peaks are clearest.

Planning a slow weekend

Choose one base and stay for the full trip, rather than moving every day. Mountain roads are slow, so allow extra time for travel. Pack warm layers, even in the warmer months, and check the weather before you leave. Keep one free day in case roads or weather change.

Road conditions and weather in the hills change quickly. Check current advice before you travel.
