How to plan a West India trip: states, gateways, seasons and pacing

A practical starting point for West India: what Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat offer, where to fly in, how long you need, when to go and how to get around.

2 minutes

In Lifelately’s guides, West India means Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat, along the Arabian Sea. Rajasthan, which many travellers combine with Gujarat, is covered in our North India guide to Rajasthan.

The states at a glance

  • Goa: beaches, Old Goa’s churches, Panaji and the forested hinterland.
  • Maharashtra: Mumbai, the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, the Western Ghats and the Konkan coast.
  • Gujarat: Ahmedabad and its stepwells, Kutch and the White Rann, Gir, Somnath and Dwarka.
  • Rajasthan: Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Mount Abu (in our North India section).

Gateways

  • Mumbai: the main international gateway, with a second airport at Navi Mumbai since December 2025.
  • Goa: Dabolim, and Manohar International at Mopa.
  • Ahmedabad: for Gujarat, with onward flights and trains to Bhuj.
  • Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad): for the Ghats and the caves.

How long do you need?

A week suits one state, or Mumbai plus Goa. Two weeks lets you combine Mumbai, the caves and Goa, or Ahmedabad, Kutch and Rajasthan. Distances are long, so build in travel days rather than trying to see everything.

When to go

  • November to February: the best season almost everywhere, and the only time to see the White Rann dry.
  • March to May: hot, very hot in Gujarat and inland Maharashtra.
  • June to September: the south-west monsoon. Very heavy rain on the coast and in the Ghats; beautiful, but plan for disruption.
  • Festivals: Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra (August or September), Navratri in Gujarat (September or October), Christmas and Carnival in Goa.

Getting around

Trains are a good way to cover distance: the Konkan Railway runs along the coast between Mumbai and Goa, and fast trains link Mumbai with Ahmedabad. Domestic flights save time on long hops such as Mumbai to Bhuj. For hill stations, forts and villages, hire a car with a driver.
