West India is big, and the best trips choose one or two areas rather than racing between them. Here are four routes to adapt.
1. Mumbai and Goa · 7 days
- Days 1–3: Mumbai: the Fort district, Elephanta, Marine Drive, Bandra.
- Day 4: fly, or take the Konkan Railway, to Goa.
- Days 5–7: Old Goa and Panaji, then a beach base in the north or south.
2. Mumbai and the caves · 6 days
- Days 1–2: Mumbai.
- Day 3: travel to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad).
- Day 4: Ellora (not on a Tuesday).
- Day 5: Ajanta (not on a Monday).
- Day 6: return to Mumbai. See Ajanta and Ellora.
3. Gujarat heritage and the White Rann · 7 days
- Days 1–2: Ahmedabad: the old city, Adalaj, Sabarmati Ashram.
- Day 3: day trip to Modhera and Patan.
- Day 4: fly or take the train to Bhuj.
- Days 5–6: the White Rann at Dhordo and craft villages (November to February).
- Day 7: return via Bhuj.
4. The Konkan coast, slowly · 8–10 days
Travel south from Mumbai along the Konkan by train and road, with stops in quiet coastal towns and a detour inland to Mahabaleshwar, ending in Goa. This works best from October to March; in the monsoon, coastal roads and the ghats are beautiful but slower and less predictable.
Extending into Rajasthan
From Ahmedabad, Udaipur and Mount Abu are within reach by road or rail. See our Rajasthan guide.
